There are hundreds of domain name registrars internationally making it virtually impossible
for us to provide the modification steps of each registrar. This article covers the
modification steps of a few popular domain name registrars. You should however consult the
particular registrar of your domain name for the exact modification steps.
Network Solutions (www.networksolutions.com)
The process of modifying your domain name record with Network Solutions can sometimes be
difficult. Modification can be accomplished three ways: "Electronically" (sent via email),
"Manage Your Account Style" (directly at the networksolutions.com website), or "Manual
Letter" (fax a letter). The three methods described:
Electronically...
This method is most common, and takes approximately 24-48 hours to fully complete the
modification. The Electronic method uses an 'email template' that is created on the
Network Solutions website, and then ultimately sent to hostmaster@networksolutions.com to
be processed automatically by a computer. Each field must be formatted exactly, or the
request is "kicked back'. Each Electronic transfer attempt generates a Tracking Number
that may found in the subject of the email reply from Network Solutions.
To make a request to modify your domain name record visit the Network Solutions website
(www.netsol.com), click "make changes", supply your domain name, and then choose
"transfer my domain to another ISP" to begin the process. If you are not able to modify
your domain with the web based utility then proceed to 'Expert Forms', and then proceed
to 'Service Agreement'. Enter your email address (the email template will be sent to this
address, and must be listed as one of the contacts for the domain name), and click 'Proceed'.
You can now make any necessary modifications to your domain record. Most importantly you
want to modify the Technical Contact, and Name Server Information with the information
provided to you in the beginning of this document. Click 'Submit This Form for
Processing', and check your email for the template to arrive. When the email arrives you will
need to reply to, or forward it on to "hostmaster@networksolutions.com". Only after this
step will your request for domain modification take place.
Provided all the above steps were completed correctly, in roughly 24-48 hours, your domain
name record will be correctly modified so that Media Temple can be resolving your domain
name to your IP address.
Manage Your Account Style...
This is a new feature offered to recent domain name registrants. It is very simple, and
offers the most expedient transfer. Some domain name owners have no other option than to
use this method, or to generate a manual letter. "Electronically" submitted requests
will be rejected. This method provides a web based interface to modify your name.
Manual Letter ...
When all else fails this method may be used. A letter may be sent via US Mail, or via
FAX to Network Solutions requesting the domain name transfer. This method is processed
by humans, and generally takes 5-7 days to complete. A Tracking Number generated from an
Electronic transfer attempt must be included with the letter. (You must attempt an
Electronic Transfer before employing the Manual Letter method).
Common Problems / Tips:
Issue: The email was returned stating there was an error processing the request.
Solution: Make sure your email program does not place or indent any special characters in your reply, or forward.
This is a common mistake and will cause your request to be returned unsuccessful.
TIP: When the message is received, take your cursor and copy the entire message to
your clipboard, open a new message and paste the contents of your clipboard into the new message,
address the email appropriately, and send it!
Register.com (www.register.com)
Register.com has made domain name modification simple by providing a web based interface to
assist you in the process. Go to www.register.com and click on "Manage My Account", follow the
links to modify the name servers of your domain name record.
More Information:
- Domain modifications can take 24-48 hours to be fully completed.
- Reboot your computer if your domain still does not appear to be resolving correctly even
after the modification wait period.
- For security purposes, domain name records can only be modified by the domain name owner.
