Switching website hosting providers

The process of changing hosting providers is fairly simple and can be accomplished with minimal hassle and downtime provided certain steps are followed in order. It is our hope that this document will serve as a road map to a hassle-free and successful transition to our service.

As the customer, you are welcome to be as involved as you like in this process. If you prefer that we take care of it for you, we'd be happy to! We can follow these steps and will only require your assistance with a few items, making the transition process nearly seamless to you.

Several events need to take place to move a website from one hosting provider for another, including:

  1. Notify your current host. The current host should be notified to ensure that the account is current and to secure a technical contact to work with during the process.

  2. Save the web files and provide to Area 51. The current host will save a copy of the website files and images to a disk or otherwise transfer them to Area 51. This will ensure that the entire website is transferred and significantly decreases the risk of certain features becoming disabled during the switch.

You will want to make sure you have a full working copy of your website files, databases, cgi scripts, etc. stored on your computer or on a CD. Additionally, download or record any pertinent email address settings, passwords, log file data, statistic reports, etc.

  3. Your site is set up and configured at Area 51. We will set up a duplicate copy of your website and email accounts on our servers, making sure that we have everything set up and working before making the actual switch. This ensures that the process is as fast and simple as possible for those that use your website and e-mail.

  4. Change DNS. The final step that actually causes the transition from one host to another is changing the DNS servers for your domain name, on the site where you originally registered the name. Since this is a critical part of the process, it is very important that you save your user ID and password when the domain name is registered for use at this time. If you cannot locate your user I D and password, the process of verifying ownership and getting new login information is required before the hosting service can be moved. Area 51 can complete or facilitate this process for you.

  5. Enjoy reliable, hassle free hosting service from Area 51.
